The Word of the Year
If you’ve ever been to a professional conference, you may have suffered from what I call “conference brain.” This is when, at the end of the day, you’ve taken in so much information that anything that requires thought is out of the question. Times like these, kicking back and watching a Disney movie is about all my grey matter can take!
On New Year’s, the Hotness and I were discussing how we want the year to play out, what we want to focus on, etc. And, of course, there are so, so many things we want to do and accomplish. We could literally start lists of things that would fill a spiral notebook. Thing is, as I’ve learned when suffering from conference brain, more is not better. What is best is to pick THE most important thing and focus in that area. I’ve come home from conferences with docs and docs of things that are high priority. But, when everything is high priority, nothing gets priority and I end up not doing any of the stuff I’m dreaming of. So, what is the one thing we have chosen to focus on in 2016?
We haven’t broken it down to a sentence or a mission statement. We’ve taken it a step further and will be focusing on one thing that can be summed up in a single word: kindness.
I’ve always loved the quote from the Buddhist thinker who says, “My religion is kindness.” Taking the sociological definition that religion is one’s ultimate concern, if we are all focusing on kindness, I think we’ll have an awesome year.
This is our word for 2016. What’s yours?
